How SharART Came to Be

SharArt is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide talented “seasoned” (aged 50 and over) visiting artists with a unique space to live, think and produce work which sparks, nurtures and engages the creativity of local residents while contributing to the revitalization of the community and image of the City of Opa-locka.

SharArt is located at the Helms House – on Sharar Avenue – the home of one of the original contractors of the City of Opa-locka, Mr. Roy Helms.

Sharar translated from Arabic to English means “spark”.  This is an ideal setting to spark and engage the community’s creativity and help re-build the City’s image.  It is one of the twenty buildings in the City listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Despite this honor, many regard these historic buildings as simply “old” houses and do not realize or appreciate their historic and artistic merit.  This dismissal is often given to seasoned people. We believe that seasoned artists will inspire and spark the creativity of residents of all ages and help renew pride in themselves and the City.
